Barbara Elkin
Mosaic Artist, Gardener
I'm a retired disability rights attorney recently transplanted to Fort Collins, Colorado from Alexandria, Virginia. I first started making mosaics when I took a mosaic workshop in September 2019 at the Art League of Alexandria and got hooked. I particularly enjoy using stained glass for my designs, but also incorporate beads, rhinestones, repurposed jewelry, and mosaic tiles in some of my work. I have begun to play with using small fused glass pieces that I am making in my tiny kiln. I am a member of the Colorado Mosaics Association, and have begun to exhibit at their shows in the Denver Metropolitan area. I have studied with Anita Bucsay Damron at the Art League and Bonnie Fitzgerald of Maverick Mosaics. I recently took a workshop with Solange Piffer and learned her amazing technique for working with picassiete (broken dishes). I have also been inspired by the work of other mosaic artists and continue to enjoy learning new techniques and styles of mosaic. I am a member of the Contemporary Mosaic Art Assocation.
In addition to my art, I have been gardening for over forty years. After having an English cottage garden and large raised vegetable bed garden in northern Virginia, I moved to Colorado where the growing conditions are very different. I am learning to xeriscape, and appreciate the plants that grow in this arid environment.
