The Garden is going strong

April has been really busy. I grew probably 150 tomato plants, planted 20, and sold the rest to benefit the local food bank. My grandson planted one of the tomatoes for me in a pot on the porch and then made a sign indicating that no slugs were allowed on the plant. Hopefully they know how to read. The eggplants and peppers are all planted, as is the basil, and I just planted bean and cucumber seeds. The zucchini and eggplants are growing under cover in hopes we can ward off the flea beetles and squash borers, although I am not optimistic that they won't win in the end. I just harvested the last of the spinach and we are eating kale and chard and heaps of lettuce including lettuce that wintered over in the front yard. We harvested a ton of dragon tongue mustard that had wintered over and now the bed is ready to receive the sweet potato plants when they come in two weeks. Onions and scallions are growing like crazy. Meanwhile I have planted four kinds of zinnia, tall ageratum, and two kinds of salvia, all started from seed in the basement. Just as exciting, the lupine I planted last year has started to bloom -- this is a new one for me, and the rose bush and peony each bloomed for the first time today. Irises are starting to bloom as well. I do expect a thunderstorm will arrive to flatten the peonies and irises when they are at their peak. It happens almost every year. Lots of pictures below, although I didn't photograph everything.
